The harbour seal almost disappeared from Germany’s North Sea coast twice: first through hunting, then through two distemper epidemics in the 1980s and 2000s that each wiped out more than half the population. Today around 40,000 harbour seals live in the Wadden Sea again – Europe’s largest population and a UNESCO World Heritage Site right on our doorstep.
