Description

Did you know that plastic is found in 99% of sharks, killing thousands of these beautiful sea creatures every year because plastic waste kills them from the inside?

By purchasing a symbolic sponsorship, you contribute directly to the protection of sharks. For every sponsorship sold, we remove plastic from the oceans with our partner greenspark (Plastic Bank).

In addition, you will receive a secret access link for each sponsorship, which you can use to track your shark (tiger shark & hammerhead shark). You can give it your own name, find out its history and follow its movements on a real-time tracking map. So you can keep an eye on your shark every day!

A team of researchers attach a small, harmless and non-invasive GPS device to them so that they can study their migration patterns.📍

Every sponsorship actively protects the animals. Collect them to save more sharks!

Note: The sponsorship is a one-off payment. There are no additional costs for tracking and it is not limited in time.

From an order value of €30, you can choose a gift. Simply click on the gift on the right-hand side of the screen or go to the gift section. This discount cannot be combined with other discounts.

frequently asked Questions

Why are sharks tracked?
To protect and manage sharks, researchers use tags to track them in their natural habitat and study their movement patterns and behavior. This tagging allows researchers to better understand life history, social behavior, reproduction and more, including how often the animals interact with fisheries. All of these areas are very important to advance shark conservation and management. For example, Saving the Blue recently tagged a great hammerhead shark in Andros. In the Bahamas, this shark has been protected as part of the national shark sanctuary. However, when the shark left the Bahamas and swam to the United States, it faced fishing pressure because regulations in federal waters allow only limited harvesting. By figuring out where the sharks move and the routes they take, scientists can understand how best to influence management and ultimately protect them. This protection is only possible through the use of markings that reveal the secrets of these fascinating creatures!
How are sharks tracked?
We use a combination of satellite and acoustic electronic devices. Satellite tags (SPOT or PSAT) are typically used to monitor migration patterns in both horizontal and vertical directions as they provide the location of sharks during tracking as well as depth and temperature information at 5 minute intervals during their deployment can. Acoustic trackers are typically used to study habitat use at a finer scale and to determine the role of various biological factors (e.g. biotic/abiotic) in shark use of specific areas.
Does it hurt the animals?
Our team takes great care in how we tag and mount the sharks. Most satellite devices are placed next to or through the dorsal fin. There are no nerve endings in the fins, and although we cannot ask a shark if it senses that we are making a hole for the tag, it does not respond. The markings are temporary and are made of materials that degrade over time, eventually leaving the shark with no trace of the markings left on it. Acoustic markers are typically implanted into the body cavity and can last up to 10 years. In many recent studies in which our scientific team has been involved, some animals have been tracked with implanted tags for up to 6 years without any adverse effects.
What are sharks afraid of?
The biggest fear of sharks is the bottlenose dolphin. Although dolphins are known to be friendly and gentle creatures, they can be skilled fighters in conflict with sharks. They fear sharks because they know that dolphins can injure the sharks' sensitive underbelly with their pointed snouts.
Can sharks be friendly?
Despite their fearsome appearance and reputation, sharks can actually be relatively friendly to humans. There are hundreds of different species of sharks, so this can vary. However, most shark species do not mind close human contact and interaction.
Will a shark attack you?
Although sharks are capable of attacking humans, they usually have no reason to do so and prefer to attack and prey on other marine animals. Since humans are not a preferred food source for sharks, shark attacks on humans are actually very rare.
What is the biggest shark?
Because there are many species of sharks, differences in size range from sharks small enough to fit in your hand to sharks larger than a school bus. The largest shark is the whale shark, which can grow up to 60 feet long.
How does a shark tracking bracelet work?
Shark tracking bracelets work using satellite technology via a small tag that is usually attached to one of the shark's fins. This tag sends signals to a satellite that indicates the shark's exact location and allows its movements to be tracked.
